The most important thing in deciding on a daypack is fit. In a lot of ways packs are like shoes in that you are much better off getting fitted by an expert.
Go to an outdoor specialty store and have a knowledgeable sales person measure your torso. As a general rule, the load-lifter straps should rise at about a 45 degree angle from your shoulders. As an absolute rule the hipbelt should wrap around your hips and stay there.
When testing the daypack in the store, remember to load the pack up with ballast to get a better sense of how the pack will feel on the trial.
When packing items for the trail, remember to pack your items so that the weight is evenly distributed and that no sharp edged items are poking into your back. Add snacks and water to the top so that they are easy to get too.
Featured Daypacks – Black Diamond RPM Daypack
The RPM Pack by Black Diamond was recently voted the best everyday pack by Outdoor magazine. For anyone looking for a simple, light, do-everything daypack, then you will love the RPM.
The padded (but frameless) back panel and well-cushioned shoulder straps keep the load comfortable on even the longest hikes. In addition, the unique 10 mm foam in the shoulder straps features perforations that channel air for a continuous cooling effect, providing all-day comfort and breathability.
The drawstring compression cinches the RPM into a tight little kit for controlling loads and can also be used for external lashing.

Featured Daypacks – Mountain Hardware Riff Day Pack
At only 15.8 ounces, the Mountain Hardwear Riff Daypack was designed for activities where weight is a priority. The Riff daypack is made from lightweight but tough 100 D siliconized Cordura. An internal hydration sleeve gives you the option of carrying a hydration bladder to stay hydrated on the trail. Or if you prefer a more traditional way of quenching your thirst, the Riff has large mesh side pockets that are perfect for water bottles.
Side compression straps keep the load closer to your back, allowing the Riff to have a more stable carry. A small top pocket holds your small essentials like your car keys or a wallet. And if the 900 cu. of storage space isn’t enough room to hold your gear, then you can simply clip onto the Riff’s external daisy chain.
